Peptide vs Protein

Where the line is drawn

Peptides and proteins are both polymers of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. The difference is one of size and structural convention: peptides are short (commonly defined as ≤50 amino acids, sometimes ≤100), while proteins are longer and typically fold into stable tertiary structures.

The distinction matters in research because short peptides can often be chemically synthesized via solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), whereas larger proteins generally require recombinant expression in bacterial, yeast, or mammalian cell systems. This is why most ‘research peptides’ in the body-comp / longevity space are synthetic (BPC-157, ipamorelin, semaglutide) while compounds like HGH or follistatin are recombinant.

Pharmacokinetically, peptides tend to have shorter plasma half-lives than proteins because they are smaller and more readily cleared by the kidneys. Modifications such as acylation (semaglutide, tirzepatide) or DAC tagging (CJC-1295 with DAC) extend half-life by promoting albumin binding.
