GDF-11 for Sleep

TGF-beta family ligand controversially linked to age-reversal via parabiosis studies.

Why GDF-11 for sleep?

GDF-11 (Growth Differentiation Factor 11) is a TGF-beta family member famously linked to reversal of cardiac hypertrophy in parabiosis experiments by Amy Wagers' lab (2013). Subsequent work by Novartis/Glass et al. (2015) disputed the original assays and showed GDF-11 can be myo-inhibitory like myostatin. Therapeutic role remains controversial.

Sleep context: Modulating sleep architecture, slow-wave sleep depth, and circadian regulation. GDF-11 fits this goal because its category (Longevity) and benefit profile align with the underlying mechanism.

Benefits relevant to sleep

  • Possible muscle/cardiac rejuvenation (debated)
  • Neurogenesis (preclinical)
