Apoptosis
Programmed and orderly cell death
Apoptosis is the controlled process in which a cell dismantles itself and dies without harming surrounding tissue. It is a normal part of development and of removing damaged or unneeded cells. Research sometimes studies whether compounds can influence apoptosis in selected cell populations.
