Free Radical
Unstable molecule that can damage cells
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that contain an unpaired electron and readily interact with nearby structures. In small amounts they participate in normal cell signaling, but excess amounts can harm lipids, proteins, and genetic material. Antioxidant systems and certain research compounds are studied for their ability to limit uncontrolled free-radical activity.
